Within a short drive of Murphy and Cherokee County lies the wild
excitement of whitewater rafting. To the east of the county, the
Nantahala River roars through gorges in the Nantahala National Forest,
offering a spectacular rafting experience over many Class II and
III rapids.
To the west of the county,
in Tennessee, the Ocoee River offers the beauty and excitement of
Whitewater rafting at its best. The site of the 1996 Olympic Slalom
Canoe/Kayak Competition, a 4.6 mile stretch of the river thunders
over many Class III and IV rapids, making it truly one of the most
exhilarating whitewater experiences anywhere.
The Nantahala River is
located approximately 30 miles east of Murphy along NC 19/129. The
Ocoee River is a mere 45 minute drive west of Murphy along Highway
64.
