The county is comprised of 300,100 acres, of which 92,363 acres are U.S. Forest Service parks and areas. Murphy, with a population of approximately 1,600 people, is the county seat.

  white water rafting and other aquatic pastimes

• Several national forests and state parks for hiking,

For those with a preference for indoor activities, there are many to choose from, including museums, Indian villages, historic places, art centers, and the Biltmore Estate.
