Hi All,...I'm a hobbiest in Sunny South Florida. This year I'm doing quite a bit of breeding primarily Red, Orange and Harlequin Phalaenopsis. I've been doing my own labwork for about 8 years. I'll also be producing stemprops this year from much of my breeding stock. You can see many of my studplants in Photos 2003.Below is a microphoto of across section of the flower petal. I'm interested in breeding orange Phalaenopsis and this enables me to see how the apparent orange color is formed. There are no orange pigments to work with in Phalaenopsis, only a mixture of red anthocyanins and Yellow Flavinoids. The anthocyanins are watersoluble and in solution in the cell vacuole. The yellow is produced in organelles just like the green chloroplasts.George Snellenberger
