The
Miami Aikikai was founded in 1978 by Nelson
Andujar, who now
holds the rank of 6th
degree black belt (Dan) and has been conferred the title of Shidoin.
He began his Aikido practice in the 1960's at the New York Aikikai,
headed by Yoshimitsu Yamada,
8th Dan, Shilan, a direct student of the founder. Sensei Andujar
opened the original dojo (school) on 37th avenue and S.W. 21st
street. Due to the limited size and the need to increase practice
space, the dojo moved to its present location in 1987.
The
Miami Aikikai is a member of the Eastern Region of the United States
Aikido Federation, under the direction of Yoshimitsu
Yamada, 8th Dan, Shidan. This Organization is recognized by
Hombu dojo (original school) in Japan.
Currently
Gustavo Ramos, 4th Dan, and
Eliot W. Rifkin, 4th Dan, each
a Fukushidon and each having studied Aikido for over twenty years,
are the chief instructors at the Miami
Aikikai.
