REAGAN IS A LOSER,
50-35 Leo Torres scored 10 points in a 2 minute, 26 second span
of the fourth quarter to break open a close game and lead visiting Southwest
past RR Doral, 50-35. The win clinches second place in the District and
guarantees the Eagles (13-4, 10-2) a place in the Greater Miami Athletic
Conference tournament starting Tuesday against an undetermined opponent
at a site yet to be announced. The victory also gives Southwest a first
round bye in the District 15 Tournament in two weeks. Coach Tom Moore
employed a unique strategy against the Bison (1-13, 0-11). All nine players
had roughly equal playing time for the first 26 minutes because every
time an Eagle turned the ball over he was replaced and moved to the end
of the bench. The player closest to Moore's end of the bench would go
in and each player would move one spot closer to entering the game. When
RR Doral moved to within 32-29 with six minutes left in the game, Moore
abandoned his strategy and put all his starters in the lineup. Less than
2 minutes later, Torres stole the ball and scored the first two points
of his 10-point fourth quarter. When The Torres Tear ended, the score
was 44-29 with 2:04 left and one could clearly hear the fat lady singing.
Gio Gonzalez equaled Torres' team-high 14 points and also led Southwest
in rebounds with 7. Oscar Blanco had 12 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
The scoring: NEXT WEEK'S CORAL PARK GAME IS CANCELED With Southwest now scheduled to play in the GMAC tournament next week, the Wednesday home game against Coral Park has been canceled. That makes Friday's game against Hialeah Gardens the final home game for the Eagles' six superb seniors. If Southwest wins Tuesday night's GMAC quarterfinal game, it will advance to a semifinal on Wednesday. Should the eagles advance to the tournament championship game, it will cause the cancellation of the final regular season game at Hialeah Gardens. |
