SOUTHWEST ROARS BACK AGAINST SUNSET
Ben
Vargas sparked the comeback and Gio Gonzalez put the exclamation point on it as
host Southwest rallied for a 46-44 victory over Sunset. The winless Knights (0-15,
0-11) threatened to spoil the Eagles' last home game of the season. Sunset took
the lead in the second quarter and held it until late in the fourth quarter. The
Knights led, 35-24, with 7:45 remaining and still led 40-32 with 3:23 remaining
when Vargas went to work. The senior hit a 2-pointer followed by two 3-pointers
over the next 1:21 to cut the margin to 42-40. Ray Lleonart then stole and was
fouled with 1:46 on the clock. Lleonart calmly drained both free throws to tie
the game. Another Southwest steal resulted in a missed shot and Sunset drew a
foul on a drive to the hoop at the 1:08 mark. The Knights made both foul shots
to go up, 44-42. Danny Portales rebounded a miss with 49 seconds left and put
it in to tie the game again at 44-44. Sunset was called for traveling 14 seconds
later giving Southwest (9-8, 7-5) the final shot. Gonzalez took it with two seconds
left and hit the game-winner. Portales had 8 rebounds and Lleonart added 6 assists.
