KILLIAN COMES FROM BEHIND TO WIN WITH 4.7 SECONDS LEFT

Killian never led until Kevin Hermanni made two free throws with 4.7 seconds remaining to defeat Southwest, 40-38, at Webber International University in Babson Park, Florida. The Eagles (14-5) led 13-5 after one quarter, 22-16 at the half, and 30-28 entering the final period. The Cougars (11-8), well-coached by former Eagle Nick Ronda, tied the score at 38-38 with 59 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Hermanni. An offensive foul on Southwest 14 seconds later gave the ball back to Killian. The Cougars held the ball until 12 seconds were left when Ronda called time out to set up the winning play. The Eagles out-rebounded the Cougars 25-17 and shot 47% from the field to 41% for Killian, but were hurt by 14 turnovers. The Cougars turned the ball over only 6 times and out-hustled Southwest for several loose balls. Ray Lleonart had 6 rebounds for the Eagles. The scoring:
Leo Torres 12
Gio Gonzalez 7
Michael Juachon 6
Oscar Blanco 6
Ray Lleonart 5
Alex Felipe 2

POSTSCRIPT

It was confirmed after the game at Embry-Riddle that Killian's final time out with 12 seconds left in the game was its sixth time out of the contest, one over the limit. The penalty for an excessive time out is a technical foul, two free throws and possession for Southwest. So, instead of Killian hitting the winning shot with 4.7 seconds left, the Eagles would have had two shots to break the tie, then the ball to run out the clock. The reason the Cougars were allowed an extra time out is because the official scorer was from Embry-Riddle and, in the college games he works, each team does get 6 time outs. Killian coach Nick Ronda says he wouldn't have called the last time out had the official scorer not told him he had one left to use.
