EAGLES ADVANCE TO DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, 51-42

Southwest defeated South Miami 51-42 in the semifinals of the District 15-6A tournament at Ferguson. The win sets up a Friday night championship game against Columbus. The Explorers scored a 2-point, officiating-aided victory in the first meeting between the schools before the Eagles won by two in overtime in the rematch. In Wednesday night's game, Southwest (17-6) led 9-7 after one quarter, 27-20 at the half and 35-27 entering the final period. The Cobras pulled to within five points with just over a minute remaining, but Gio Gonzalez hit four foul shots to end the threat. Michael Juachon took an elbow between the eyes late in the second quarter and missed almost all of the third quarter. He was taken to the hospital for stitches after the game. Juachon still led the Eagles in rebounds with 6 while Gonzalez led in points (15), steals (5), and assists (2). Regardless of the outcome of Friday night's game, both teams will advance to the Regional Tournament that begins next week. Southwest coach Tom Moore told the Miami Herald "When your team average is 5-foot-10, you have to play good team basketball, and we did." The scoring:
Gio Gonzalez 15
Ray Lleonart 10
Michael Juachon 9
Leo Torres 7
Oscar Blanco 6
Alex Felipe 2
Alex Mola 2
