EAGLES LOSE SECOND STRAIGHT

Southwest jumped out to a 14-3 lead before succumbing to the defensive pressure of Ft. Pierce Central, 52-40, in the opening round of the Holiday Hoopla tournament at Vero Beach High School. The game was tied 20-20 at the half when the Cobras (8-2) went on an 11-0 run to start the third quarter. The Eagles (5-2) did not hit a field goal until midway through the period when Michael Juachon scored. Unfortunately, Juachon fouled out with 2:37 remaining in the third quarter and Southwest lost a strong presence underneath the basket. With Juachon gone, 6'6" center Giorgio Newberry scored 8 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter. The Eagles pulled to within 6 points with 5 minutes remaining, but never got closer the rest of the way. Coach Tom Moore cleared his bench with 52 seconds remaining so everyone could get some playing time. Southwest plays at 4:30pm Tuesday against host Vero Beach. This web site will not be updated with the results of that game until Wednesday.
The scoring:
Gonzalez 14
